GoLive CS2 Components Tutorial
So You want to make a website, but you don't want to spend all of your time updating the site after it's all done. Well, Adobe GoLive CS2 is here to help. Through the use of Components, you can create a section of your page that consists of a seperate page, this html will be included in your sites code, and every time you update the component, it will automatically update every page that icludes this component. This can potentially save you hours upon hours of time spent updating links to every page. Interested? Then read on...

Click File, New then when the screen above appears select WEB, Pages, Component Page. Afterwards a page like the one below will appear.
First things first, delete all of the text that is there by default, just highlight it with your mouse, and press delete. You will now have a nice empty box, so lets go ahead and put something in there. Locate your Objects toolbar, select basic objects, and drag and drop a CSS Layout box into your site while in Layout View. Re-Size your CSS Layout Box to the size desired and you will be left with something like this:
Now, for this tutorial, we will be making a Copyright Component, so that when the year changes, we just have to update one page to change the year of the copyright, rather than use a frame, or update everypage on our site. So we will be adding a text baox into our CSS Layout box, you however, can add whatever you would like to be on every page ( a php script for example, or some other item that you would like to easily update). Anyhow, grab your object, and drop it into your CSS Layout Box.
Re-size your object to the size you wish it to be, and if it is a floating text box, go ahead and add some text (or add whatever it is you would like your components to contain)
Now that your componet is complete. All that is left is to save it, so selct file, save as. When the save as box appears, this is where it gets a little tricky. Navigate to the root of your website on your hardrive, and click the little file below the file type selection box as depicted in the image below.
When you click on the site folder option, a pop-up menu will appear asking where you would like to switch to. Select Components, and when you switch to that folder, name your file something you'll remember (in this case copyright.html). Now that you have your component saved, you can start adding them to your pages. Just open the page you would like to add the component to, Select EXTRAS in your Site folder as shown below.

Once EXTRAS is selected, click on the components icon (as shown above on the right) Your newly created component should now be visable (if not, be sure you saved the file in the components folder in your sites directory on your hardrive) All that is left to do is drag and drop your component into your page. I find it helpful to add the componet to a CSS Layout box of its own on each page, this helps control the size of the component that gets added to the page (sometimes GoLive can go a little out of control with this) . Add this Component to every page you wish it to appear on your site. Now every time you wish to change this component, just open it like any other page, edit it, re-save it, and Adobe GoLive will automatically update every page that the component is on! Remember if a page that contains a component is open when you are updating that component, you will have to manually save that page, so it is wise to have all of your HTML pages closed when updating a component. Well thats it, I hope after reading this tutorial that you are able to understand to HUGE amount of time that useing components will save for you.
