GoLive CS2 Using Smart Objects Tutorial
Adobe GoLive CS2 Introduces a powerfull tool for any web designer, Smart Objects. Smart Objects enable web designers to edit and optimize images on the fly, no longer requiring the need to switch programs.
Above are the adobe Smart objects (for an explanation of the smart objects see our smart object tutorial ) In this tutorial you are going to learn how to use smart objects. At first the concept can be a bit confusing, only because this is an entirely new way of creating web pages, but you will find it is a far superior way than the usual style. First you will need an image file. This file can be of any type, as long as it is an image. Depending on the file extension of your image (.psd, .jpg, .gif, .png, .pdf, .ai, etc...) select the Smart Object that relates to your image. For example for a .psd you would use a smart photoshop object but for a .jpg you would use a Generic smart object. Ok, now place that object on your page (simply go into layout view, and drag and drop the object onto the screen) You will now have a small square in your page. Click on the image to select it, and on your inspector toolbox (top right) in the box named source either type the location of your image file, or click the folder icon at the end of the box to browse for it. Once you have selected your file, a new window will open displaying your image. From here you can re-save the image in a web format as well as optimize the quality of the image. Once you have the settings the way you want click save, you will be promted for the location you wish to save the image, choose a location within your web content folder that is suitable for images ( you may have to create a new folder) and press save. Your image has now been added to the smart object icon in your layout view. Now you can re-size the image to your hearts content, and each time, Go-Live will automatically re-optimize the new image while leaving the original un-touch. This is important because if you have ever seen a poorly optimized page, you know that when you re-size an image through HTML the quality is not very good. One thing to remember is that wherever you save your new smart image, when published and viewed online, the web-page will look for that folders location, so make sure you upload the image in the same location as it is in on your hardrive, or edit the HTML code so that it references where the image will be located on your server. Well Thats it, I hope I made sense to you, if not, write me here and I will do what I can to help
